"A salty dose of high-seas adventure....First-class storytelling." --Library Journal

"Glorious . . . I never enjoyed a novel more than Captain Blood." --Norman Mailer

Captain Blood His Odyssey by Rafael Sabatini is just possibly the novel that gave rise to the modern definition of a gentleman pirate. Peter Blood, an honest man of true character and a humane doctor, is wrongfully imprisoned for treason under the laws of King James, and deported from Britain to a tropical colony at Bridgetown where he is sold as a slave at auction. Soon he encounters romantic inspiration, conflict, injustice, and ultimately finds himself in charge of an armada of pirate ships of various flags and national alliances, becoming the famous and invincible Captain Blood, the most honorable and remarkable buccaneer throughout the South Seas.

This classic romantic pirate tale has been immortalized in a dashing movie starring Errol Flynn.

I have read and re read this book numerous times since I was 12 years old, and it remains one of my favorites. Nearly a century ago, Rafael Sabatini was an extremely popular writer, and with good reason. Most of his novels are action/adventure stories, but his characters are interesting, his dialogue witty, and his writing lively. One may find his style a bit on the old fashioned side, but it holds up surprisingly well. He wrote many other novels, a number of which led to movies in the 1930's and 40's, as well as others that have been more or less lost to modern readers (most are available from Amazon).

This pirate story is the father of all pirate stories, and it is, of course the basis of the movie by the same name. If ever a literary character was created to be played by Errol Flynn, it was Peter Blood. This book is loads of fun, but I think it stands as a work of literature. After all, it's been in print more or less continuously for about 90 years. Read the book, see the movie. (The movie is one of my all time favorites as well; I can't resist Errol Flynn and a good sword

Captain Blood His Odyssey Rafael Sabatini 9781482368772 Books Reviews

As a long-time fan of the book Captain Blood, I had lent my only readable copy out and never got it back. I wanted a new copy, as I believe one should always have the ability to reunite with a book and its characters – like an old friend. This copy did not disappoint. The cover art is amazing, done by Gregory Manchess it shows a pirate with a brace of pistols during a sea battle. The print and font are easy to read as well.
Now the book – Captain Blood remains an all-time favorite of mine. If you think you know the story based on the Errol Flynn classic, that was a good film but it does not measure up. The story is about a doctor sold into slavery on the island of Barbados for aiding rebels against King James. The doctor develops a romance with a colonel’s daughter but soon devises a way to escape from the island during an attack from the Spanish. He and his fellow slaves become gentleman pirates. The book is an epic adventure story of swashbuckling adventures and romance in the Caribbean. The language is extremely witty and the characters grow on you. I would highly recommend this to any fan of Robert Louis Stevenson, Alexander Dumas, or Daniel Defoe.
Captain Blood gets a 5 star rating simply because it is so entertaining and moves quickly from one adventure to a another. Traditionally a novel about swash buckling buccaneers is not written in the highest literary sense. Sabatini, however, brings a high level of sophistication to his novel. It is hard to put the story down as you read through the day by day heroic acts, escapes, sea battles and romance of Captain Blood. A great hero is always admired and it does not get any better than Blood. It brought me back to my youth imagining great heroes on the high seas. Not a bad place to be occasionally.
As one other reviewer already pointed out, the liberties the author takes with coincidences and the main character's his abilities are simply too much to indulge. I could stomach him being able to speak Spanish, French, and Catalan, but continually saying that he speaks it impeccably without the slightly trace of accent or word choice, having the fluency of natives despite no education in any of them, is just too much. This in addition to his infallible character and soothsayer foresight despite the circumstances are well beyond out of place nor tolerable. I gave it an honest 200 pages but I just could not take it anymore.
A young doctor is accused of treason and sentenced to hang because he has gone to the aid of one wounded in a battle against the ruling king of England. At the last minute the king orders that one hundred of those sentenced to death will be sent as slaves to work on the plantations of Barbados and Jamaica. The doctor is allowed to enrich his owner by using his skills as a doctor as the other doctors start helping him in his plans to escape. When the island is attacked by a Spanish ship Doctor Blood leads some of the other slaves to overtake the ship while the crew is celebrating its victory. The slave-convicts sail off and join the pirates.
I have read Captain Blood many times. I enjoy it more each time. It is a masterpiece of swashbuckling adventure and romance. Maybe it is because it was written in 1935, but it is so nice to read stories that do not have gratuitous sex scenes added or a lot of graphic violence. The language is much more flowery than what we normally get in today's novels.

I wish someone would do a remake of Captain Blood, the movie. The Errol Flynn movie is still good, but with today's special effects, it could be really good if they didn't ruin it like Disney ruined the Pirates of the Caribbean movies with too much absurdity. The books are great though.

By the way, there are two sequels of this book. They do not take place after this book, but are more adventures that would have been during the time of this story, but didn't get put into this book because it would have been a lot more pages. These sequels are both as enjoyable as this book to read.

Since all of Rafael Sabatini's books are now in the public domain, one great perk for people who have a or an iPhone with a app, you can get these books for free as eBooks.
I read a lot of stories that are set in the age of sailing ships. This one I had not read just why I don't know, but the movie starring Errol Flynn is one of my favorites. So I decided it was time to read Captain Blood and compare the book to the movie. Back in my youth I read Scaramouche by Rafael Sabatini and liked it so why did I wait so long to read this one heck if I know. This is a story of a man, whose only crime was to be humane at a bad time in English History. Peter Blood is a doctor accused of treason and sent into slavery in the West Indies. There he escaped and becomes a buccaneers. More than adventure story it is about redemption of a man, who has grown cynical due to his fate. If you have seen the movie based on this book then by all means read this book as you be amazed by how the movie follows the book. Trust me this is a great story that had a great movie made from it. I have kicked myself for not reading this book years ago.
