I was overwhelmed with all the different options on curriculum on how to teach your child how to read. My daughter was 3 1/2 when I purchase this book and didn't even know that her whole entire alphabet. I was just randomly teaching her letters and using different ideas off of Pinterest. I finally got tired of not doing anything consistently and decided I needed something to tell me exactly what I should do. I want to I was about to spend over $100 on curriculum. But my friend told me she was using this book and since the prices so cheap I decided to give it a try first.
I am is ecstatic! I just follow the instructions just as it states in the book and have my daughter do a page and she can now read! And to be completely honest we are only on lesson three. She is more confident now and can read the full sentences!
So very happy that I purchased this book so I highly recommend it to anyone. On occasion my daughter gets bored from just doing a workbook page so I will use things like a sticker every time she reads a word correctly and when a she read a sentence she gets a raisin. I also made a simple pocket chart and wrote the words that she has learned on notecards and then had her put the sentences together that are in her workbook.
This book this workbook was just the structure that I needed!
I used this book to help teach a 60 year old refugee how to read. She could speak six languages, but had never attended school or been literate in any language. I was afraid this book might be too babyish, but she loved it. I think the simplicity of the phrases and stories made her feel more relaxed, and she sometimes used the illustrations to pick up clues about the story.
While I liked the book too, there were things that were annoying to me. The book often uses short phrases before longer passages as a way to let the reader practice key words. You have to keep in mind that they use a very specific progression in this book. For a long time, sentences will begin with lowercase letters--and that actually makes sense if you read their philosophy on that--but it annoyed me that sentences often had random periods, and didn't make much sense. This may not be as much of an issue if you are teaching a child whose first language is English, but it was a little more problematic when teaching an adult who is trying to understand what things mean, and why things are phrased in certain ways.
The other thing that was frustrating was that some of their pronunciation cues were simply wrong--for instance, the double "oo" is very different if you're pronouncing "zoo" or "too" versus "took" or "look". And there were other issues, particularly with the long "U" sound.
For those who have specific preferences on how to teach reading, I would say this book relies a little more on memorization rather than rules. I taught her some of the rules as we went through the book together, and we practiced common sight words to help get her up to speed faster.
Overall this book was a great help, and increased her confidence dramatically. Just try to relax and go with the flow of this teaching method, if you are going to try it. While it doesn't make much sense at first, I promise they move into proper punctuation, capitalization, and grammar by the end! Mainly, keep sessions short and positive so that your emerging reader will feel confident and excited about their progress, and will love reading in the future. Good luck!
This is actually a very large books, the idea behind it is well thought out and thoroughly explained in the introduction, The lessons are easy to follow as the parent and easy for the kids to follow as well. My daughter was not ready for it though as she struggled with recognition and so we plan on trying it again in a couple months. For a child who is a little better at their letter sounds this would be an easier lesson. I do think it would teach your child to read rather quickly and I have every intention of trying again and will update than. The lessons start off slowly and are very repetitive and easy to help build your child's confidence. Calli was more than excited when she read her first word in the first week (they teach c,o,s,a,t, first so the first week she could read c.a.t.) and it did give her a drive to keep going with it.
