I'm not usually a fan of books stuffed with bedroom drama, especially when there's very little plot. But in this case, the intense relationship IS the plot, and it's worth reading. I can't recall a more meltingly sensual scene than the mirror episode--not titillating so much as simply breath-taking. Points subtracted for minor distractions (like modernized language and misnomered titles), points added for humor, it's 5* to me for pulling off a relationship most of us can only dream about. Awesome!

What I Did For a Duke Pennyroyal Green Series Julie Anne Long 9780061885686 Books Reviews

"What I Did for a Duke" might be my favorite book in this series, though installments one and four are also excellent. Long writes yet another inventive, engaging story in her characteristically colorful, interesting prose "She’d pointed that neat profile away from him again. But when the corners of her pale mouth had tightened, he saw—yes, he saw—a dimple. And now he was certain, he was certain she was doing combat with a smile." This time there are no pace issues and only a handful of typos. It's about as near perfect as a romance novel gets. Just sublime.
This was a fun historical romance that had me smiling and interested the whole time. With a heroine like Genevieve who is smart, intelligent and very clever I never felt like I wanted to hit her over the head. She called things as she saw them and often saw straight through the actions of another, namely the Duke. Though blind to some things she quickly figures them out and corrects any errors she made. I really enjoyed reading a heroine that wasn’t easily duped or played dumb.

The Duke is a quintessential alpha male intent on receiving his revenge. When his plan is foiled, so to speak, he starts at another objective to “help” Genevieve. Through the days of the house party we watch the romance blossom. Barbs and innuendo are thrown back and forth which I delighted in.

There is not much else that occurs during the course of the story besides the interactions between the Duke and Genevieve which made the story feel light. Not much depth to the story either but still plenty of wittiness and “cleverness” to delight me and make me want to know what will happen next.

I really enjoyed this one and am happy I read it as it seemed to help pull me out of a funk I had the week prior.
It's been quite a while since I've properly reviewed a romance novel on the blog, but it seems fitting that the first one that earns a review after this (unplanned) hiatus is What I Did for a Duke. After the girls convinced me that I must read it, I finally got around to it - and I'm so glad that I did. This book had me laughing and weeping in public, and it's such a sweet romance.

What truly makes a romance novel interesting to me are the characters. I can happily report that I could relate to Genevieve quite strongly, though I often wanted to (gently) smack her on the upside of the head for her assumptions. I loved her stubborness, her clever mind and her kindness. And as for Alex, he was my typical type when it comes to romance heroes - a (supposed) bad boy with a vulnerable heart, a heart that's caged and protected because of something that hurt him in the past. His witty retorts and his more vulnerable moments with Genevieve were amazing.

The story runs a typical vein of romance (as you can tell from the plot), but the author managed to make it her own. This mostly has to do with the witty repartee between her characters, which I absolutely loved. And even though I could predict most of what happened between them, I was still pleasantly charmed as the book drew to a close - and so moved that I started crying as I hit that crucial moment between them... which might have been slightly awkward since I was sitting in the library surrounded by people at the time.

All in all, this novel was an absolutely wonderful way to jump back into one of my favorite genres. What I Did for a Duke is the kind of romance you can read over and over again (and I have half a mind to!), with a story that's charming, sweet and just plain fun. I definitely enjoyed it, and I would highly recommend it to both veterans and newbies to historical romance.
The book opens with a funny scene where a gentleman, who's about to finally sleep with a woman (after days of heavy flirting, mind you!), is discovered by the woman's fiance (who happens to be a Duke with fearsome reputation) just before he does the deed. It's a killable offense in those days, but the Duke decides to draw out the punishment instead by coming up with a 'diabolical' idea to sleep with the man's sister. Bed her and leave her. An eye for an eye, so to speak.

In case you think this is the usual revenge romance, let me assure you that it's not. The man's sister, Genevieve, quickly discovers the silly revenge plot by astute observation and calls the Duke out for it. But what makes this book stands above the rest is the repartee between the Duke and Genevieve. It's full of funny and witty banter, back and forth, which in turn gives this reader insight to both characters. All this Author's trademark humor is present in full force, making this book a delightful read indeed!
I'm not usually a fan of books stuffed with bedroom drama, especially when there's very little plot. But in this case, the intense relationship IS the plot, and it's worth reading. I can't recall a more meltingly sensual scene than the mirror episode--not titillating so much as simply breath-taking.
