I enjoy the mystery/detective novels by Lindsey Davis as much as any I've ever read, at least for sheer pleasure reading. I've had an interest in ancient Rome (and the general ancient Mediterranean area) for many years, and although I don't believe knowledge of it is required to enjoy these novels, it certainly adds to my pleasure when I run across these enriching details. I haven't yet moved from the Marcus Didius Falco stories into those about his step-daughter, Albia, but am greatly anticipating those, as well. I can't recommend books by Davis enough, especially for those who enjoy a bit of history and humor with their mystery novels.Tags : Last Act in Palmyra (Marcus Didius Falco Mysteries) [Lindsey Davis] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. The entire Marcus Didius Falco series is a treasure worth reading and keeping. In this installment Falco writes a play and rewrites a few others, solves a murder and meets the father of comedy. Wit and banter flow throughout. Read it. I couldn't put it down.
An excellent addition to Davis' Marcus Didius Falco series!
If you enjoy the others in this series you will enjoy this one.
As a recent fan of the Falco series I am working my way through from the first book to the last and this was one of my favorites so far! Davis really did her homework and it shows through the detail and insights she give of the ancient Middle East. Loved reading as Falco and Helena traveled, then I would hop on Google Earth and Wikipedia to see what the sites are like now. Fascinating history and a gang-busters ending!
I now own almost all of the M. Didius Falco books in both digital and print format. I reread them (as I do most things I really like) fairly regularly, and prefer the digital for traveling. If I'm home, I'll just grab the book ... the world and character Davis has created are alive and well, just an awful long time ago.
This one -- number six in the series -- is the one where my very high opinion began to slip a bit. It's still a wonderful recreation of the Roman milieu (this time involving an extended excursion to what is now Syria), and the characters are still engaging and interesting. But the story is perhaps a tad less compelling, and does drag a bit. Or, perhaps, the problem is that Falco is settling down to domesticity, no matter how exotic. If I could give three and half stars I would, but for old times' sake I'll round up.
Private informer Marcus Didius Falco reluctantly agrees to work for Emperor Vespasian by undertaking a preliminary visit to the rock city of Petra (remember the temple from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade?). That visit is cut a little short thanks to some chicanery and Falco finds himself investigating a murder and joining a touring theatrical group. With his girlfriend, Helena Justina, his group works its way toward Damascus. The usual amazing wealth of detail on Roman life with a large helping of Falco's sardonic humor. A great entry in the Falco series.
