Charles Wise, a twelve year old boy from Massachusetts is transported to planet Cambium by the dryad Heartwood. Heartwood informs Charles about Cambium’s harrowing past. He explains how Domin, a ruthless cybernetic dog eradicated his former masters, the humans of Cambium. Humans discarded nature and it responded violently. The planet went through a supernatural evolutionary change. Realigning itself, creating new resilient species such as witches and warlocks. Charles meets the Witches of Larista befriending one named Vesta, who struggles with her mother’s untimely death. Vesta tells Charles about Cynad, a once beloved witch matriarch who orchestrated the escape of witches from their oppressive warlock husbands. She risked her life holding clandestine meetings to teach reading to witches, an illegal practice in Linz. She encouraged witches to practice their powers in private, an act of defiance but a means for escape to the mountains of Larista. Eventually Cynad becomes an outcast, when she could not see past her own hatred. Heartwood tells Charles about their planet’s uncertain future. Aliens recently landed on Cambium unleashing a virus which fossilizes dryads. Heartwood’s plan is to return to the alien ship to stop the virus. Heartwood is taking Charles not on a magical journey but on a mission. Accompanying Heartwood are the witches of Larista, the elves of Delvinport and the gnomes of Krow. Unbeknownst to Charles, he is the key to Cambium’s salvation, if he can learn to love Cambium as his home. When Domin finds out a human walks the lands, breaking Cambium law, he’ll stop at nothing to ensure Charles is destroyed. His vengeance puts every living creature at risk of contracting this insidious virus. It is a race against time and the outcome could be catastrophic for Cambium.

This book is great first book from a new author. The characters are interesting, and the setting (post apocalyptic fantasy world) is really fascinating. Witches, warlocks, dryads, cybernetic dogs, it has it all. Great book for any young adult. It reminds me in many ways of the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe with the main character coming across from our world into the fantasy world, and experiencing this new world at the same time as the reader.As a small criticism, not enough to remove a full star: sometimes the punctuation was a little lacking. For example, in one case it says "We're going to eat Charles" instead of "We're going to eat, Charles" ... small thing, and I accept that I'm pretty picky about that stuff... and to be honest, that one made me laugh :)
By the way, I love the new cover.

This is a great book! Incredible imagination with great detail. You can easily envision the scenes coming together!! Great development of characters. Perfect for young adults (12+)to adults.
A very entertaining and imaginative read set in a world where nature has taken over and evolution has gone wild! When a strange and dangerous virus threatens to destroy their world Heartwood and the Witches of Larista call on Charles, a twelve year old boy, to save their planet. With talking trees, elves, witches and cybernetic `super' dogs, Heartwood and the Witches of Larista is like the Wizard of Oz meets Terminator!
I chose a 5 star rating because this book has unique characters,and many adventurous themes. The book is well written with exceptional descriptive imagery of a new world(Cambium). The author brings mystery,excitement,and continually provokes our imagination.It is a page turner,and a great read! This book would make a great movie!
I would recommend this book for children ages 12+,and for all adults who enjoyed Harry Potter.
